SOCIAL STUDIES

Social studies is a school subject that assists students to acquire the basic knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes needed to be responsible citizens and contributing members of society.  The content of social studies draws upon history, geography, economics, other social sciences, the behavioural sciences and the humanities.  The content also serves as the context in which important skills and attitudes are developed.

During the first term of the year, the students will be learning about Canada's geographic regions. The information covered in these chapters will include the location of the region, bodies of water, geographic features of the land, natural resources, plant and animal life.  To accompany each chapter the students will have an assignment that will require them to utilize the text to locate answers covered in the reading and to put that information into proper written answer format, which will allow them to review social studies content and improve written language skills through the same assignment.  These assignments can then be used as a means of studying for chapter quizzes.
